The teams entered in this year’s event were provided with the best weather conditions in awwaffic’s history. Around 30 companies from across the UK had entered teams in the eighth Anglian Water WaterAid Fly Fishing Challenge to help raise much needed funds for the charity. Following an impressive event opening by Lewis Carlin, Rutland county town crier, the 100 anglers made for the boats with the volunteers from Rutland Water Fly Fishers. The event remains popular with novice anglers and RWFF experts were on had to ensure that all 50 of them got the best out of the day.

On leaving the harbour the boats mainly headed for Manton, Yellowstones and the Main Basin. Almost immediately boats were catching fish in the sunny warm conditions. The breeze dropped in the afternoon making the fishing a little more difficult. The best methods seemed to be intermediate lines with orange Blobs and black and green lures. The 100 anglers caught an impressive 171 fish weighing in at over 398 lbs, the best catch the event has seen since it started in 2002.

The winning team Left (sponsored by J N Bentley) this year was Northumbrian Water who caught 20 fish for 49lb 1oz. In second place (sponsored by Projective Ltd) were IWS Tipplers with 15 fish for 33lb 13oz and third place went to last years winners Computer Recycling Technology Fly Fishers with 13 fish for 29lb 10oz.

The top individual experienced angler (sponsored by Turner and Townsend) was Don Coe from Northumbrian Water with 7 fish for 17lb 1oz. Kevin Pick also from Northumbrian Water caught the largest fish (sponsored by Jacobs LES Ltd) of the experienced anglers which weighed in as a cracking 3lb 14oz rainbow trout.
The best individual novice (sponsored by RSK) was Adam Brookes (IWS Tipplers) with 8 fish for 17lb 8oz. The largest fish caught by a novice (sponsored by May Gurney) weighed in at 3lb 8oz and was landed by Bruce Gardener from IWS Hookers.
The top gillie trophy (sponsored by Air Technology Ltd) went to Mick Brooksby (RWFF and AW Warden) who helped Adam Brookes and John McGuckin of IWS Tipplers to catch 10 Trout weighing in at over 20lb.
A dinner (supplied by Horseshoe Catering) was enjoyed after the event where Paul Valleley, Director of Water Services for Anglian Water, presented the winners trophies. The evening was finished off with an auction (run by Jeff Dale of Oakham auction centre) and a raffle to raise over £2,000 for WaterAid.

The total raised by awwaffic 2009 was over £15,500 taking the total raised by the event to over £120,500 in the eight years it has been running.
