WaterAid Fly Fishing Challenge 2006 Hooks More Cash for
Water Charity.
The fifth Anglian Water WaterAid Fly Fishing Challenge (awwaffic) has raised over £19,000 for WaterAid, up more than £1000 on last year’s total.
Teams from all over the UK fished in this years event at Rutland Water in tough conditions and together with the event sponsors helped to raise over £19,000 for WaterAid. This years money will allow WaterAid to provide around 1300 people in Tanzania with safe water, sanitation and hygiene education for life.
The windy weather made fishing at the prestigious venue a challenge with the 132 anglers, including 55 novices, seeking shelter off Hambleton Peninsular and the bays of the north and south arms. Despite the heavy swell and coloured water the teams from UK water industry companies caught over 70 fish and the Betafence Ltd team, from Sheffield, emerged the winners with 10 fish for 27lb 10oz. They were presented with the Winning Team Trophy (sponsored by AWG) and the Paul Crowe Shield (sponsored by ABIC engineering) by Anglian Water’s Director of Regulation, Jean Spencer.
The winning individual was John Carter a novice angler from team Betafence Ltd catching 4 fish for 12lb 9oz including the largest fish on the day, a fantastic brown trout weighing in at 6lb.
The event was made possible by Anglian Water fisheries staff, local club Rutland Water Fly Fishers (RWFF) and volunteers. Around 20 RWFF members put a lot of effort into ensuring the novice anglers were catered for again this year, helping to set up over 50 fly rods, providing casting clinics and accompanying novices in the boats. As a result this event has potentially generated over 50 new fly fishers.
The organisers, local anglers Chris Evans and Paul Dimbleby, would like to thank Anglian Water Fisheries, all the event Sponsors and Contributors and the volunteers who helped make the day a great success. The event has now raised over £65,000 for WaterAid since 2001.
Next years event will be held at Rutland Water on the 18th May. For more information on the event please visit www.awwaffic.org.
