Anglian Water WaterAid Fly Fishing Challenge 2005 Raises Record Sum at Rutland Water.

Anglers from all over the UK came together at Rutland Water on the 24th June to fish in the 4th AW WaterAid Fly Fishing Challenge and help raise a record amount of cash for the charity. Another fully subscribed event saw 130 anglers take to the water in very wet weather and raise over £18,000 which will help to supply safe water supplies and sanitation to thousands of the poorest people in the developing world.

This years event has received fantastic support again from companies around the UK with teams from as far north as United Utilities Scotland and Southern Water in the south.

Fishing at the prestigious venue had been difficult in the preceding week and the teams, including the 60 novice anglers, fished hard in the rain with the Southern Water team emerging the winners. They were presented with the Winning Team Trophy (sponsored by O2) and the Paul Crowe Shield (sponsored by ABIC engineering) by Anglian Water’s Chief Operating Officer, Peter Simpson.

The winning individual was Rob Barden of Southern Water catching 5 fish for 9lb 6oz and the winning novice was Tony Roberts of the O2 in Action team who caught 1 fish weighing 3lb 4oz.

Rutland Water Fly Fishers were again out in force this year providing critical event support. Around 15 members committed their time to pre-match tasks and planning together with casting clinics and boat fishing tuition on the day.

The organisers, local anglers Chris Evans and Paul Dimbleby, would like to thank Anglian Water Fisheries, all the event Sponsors and Contributors and the volunteers who helped make the day a great success. The event has now raised over £46,000 for WaterAid.
